Museums in Wellington offer such treats for everyone from history buffs and art lovers, to music fans and movie addicts. Te Papa is the major museum here, containing everything you ever needed to know about New Zealand, young and old. Museums Aotearoa on The Terrace has information on all Wellington museums, so is worth a trip before deciding what to do. Lower Hutt has a great art museum, and you can find a great, preserved colonial house in Mount Cook. If you're short on time, Jervois Quay near Queens Wharf has around half a dozen museums, dedicated to things like the sea, history of Wellington, even the Olympics. Many museums are free, or have a nominal entrance fee. Make the most of the onsite coffee shops and gift stores.
